We host a unique musical challenge every week. We want our students to develop important musical skills, learn to be creative, and hone their problem-solving skills. We also hope that this page, as it continues to grow, serves as a valuable resource space for parents. 

Listening Series
May 15-21, 2023

For the month of May, we will be exploring music of the Classical period.

This week we will be listening to the piano piece, "Fur Elise", by Beethoven. I'm confident that most of you will have heard the beginning of it, but the middle is a little less known! Please watch and listen to this video.

Unlike the other challenges, the listening assignments are not optional. Music literacy is an important aspect of being a well rounded student-musician!

Listening Series
May 1-May 7, 2023

For the month of May, we will be exploring music of the Classical period.

This week we will be listening to the iconic string ensemble piece "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by Mozart. I'm confident that most of you will have heard bits and pieces of it, but this is your chance to hear it in context! Please watch and listen to this video. 

We highly encourage you to listen to the whole piece, since it is such a famous and influential piece of music, but you are only required to listen up to the 8:45 mark.

Listening Series
April 24-April 30, 2023

For the month of April, we will be exploring music of the Baroque period.

This week we will be listening to J.S. Bach's, "Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major". Please listen to this recording. This is Yo-Yo Ma's interpretation, and has 15 million views!

​

Unlike the other challenges, the listening assignments are not optional. Music literacy is an important aspect of being a well rounded student-musician!

​

Students should write a few sentences about their observations of the piece. These could include thoughts about the player's interpretation, stylistic elements that are representative of the Baroque era, how the piece made you feel, what it made you think of, or anything else you think is relevant to the piece!

​

This week we will be listening to Antonio Vivaldi's Violin Concerto, "Four Seasons". We will just be focusing on the Allegro part of the "Spring" section. Please watch and listen to this video. The Allegro section is from 0:00-3:30, but feel free to listen to the whole piece if you're so inclined!

March Practice Competition!
March 6th-31st

Starting on Monday, March 6th, there will be prizes each week for the student who practices for the most amount of time in their category!

Each practice week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday evening at 10:00pm.

​

There will be three prizes each week, one for each category:

Beginners - Piano Adventures Primer level to 3a

Intermediate - RCM 1-4

Advanced - RCM 5-9

​

In order to participate, each student must fill out the practice forms with the amount of time practiced on each day of the practice week (Monday through Sunday). Parents must sign these forms to verify that the information is accurate and submit them by Sunday evening, at 10:00pm. 

​

Forms can be submitted by taking a photo and uploading it to the website!

​

The winners will receive the candy of their choice or a Starbucks Giftcard, and will get a shoutout on our social media!

Weekly Challenge: Famous Melodies
October 4-10, 2022

 In this week's challenge, I will give you the beginning of a famous melody. Your job is to finish the melody in your own way! The melody for today is the beginning of Vivaldi's "Spring" from the violin concerto, "The Four Seasons."

If you want to write out your composition, you can print off the sheet music and fill in the blank measures.

​

For students at or below RCM level 2, you will finish the melody by composing at least two more measures.

​

For students at RCM level 3 and up, you will compose 4-8 more measures. Bonus points will be awarded if you add some LH notes or chords!

​
